Chapter 8
Sam abruptly interrupted his conversation with Tyrell. “Kayla, what are you doing here?”
Kayla stopped within a foot of him. “Hello, Sam, I mean Pastor Jerrod.” She then exchanged greetings with Tyrell.
Sam grinned and gestured to embrace her. Tyrell cleared his throat to catch his attention. Sam regained his posture. “This is a pleasant surprise. Have you been here the entire time?”
“Yes, I—” She nervously glanced at Tyrell.
“I’ll meet you in the back,” Tyrell said. He then nodded at Kayla. “Nice seeing you again.”
Sam took her by the hand and led her to the base of the platform. “Kayla, what’s wrong?” Sam asked once they were away from the crowd.
“I came here because I needed to talk to you, but I was late and got stuck in Bible Study.”
Sam chucked.
“That’s not funny. I got stopped by the church police.” She told him about the woman she labeled as the warden.
He laughed some more and then became serious. “I’m glad you’re here. I hope you enjoyed the lesson.”
“We can talk about that later. If you’re not busy,” she added after a pause.
“Kayla, I’m sorry. I have a meeting with the Youth Department in five minutes.”
Kayla looked away in an attempt to hide her disappointment, but Sam saw the sadness. Knowing she needed him caused the muscles in his chest to tighten. Seeing Kayla unhappy made him ache. “Would you like to share dessert with me?”
Kayla faced him. “When?” she asked, suppressing a smile.
“The meeting shouldn’t take any longer than twenty minutes. If you provide dessert, I’ll stop by.”
Kayla was smiling again. “I’ll stop by the store and pick up some vanilla ice cream.”
“Make it Ben & Jerry’s Peach Cobbler and it’s a date, or meeting,” he quickly added.
“Call it whatever you like, but at least you’re spreading your wings.” She playfully slapped his arm.
The brief contact reminded Sam of how much he’d missed her, and how much he wished he didn’t have to preside over the meeting. “I took your advice. Slowly I’m trying different things and adding more color in my life.” Sam reached for his portfolio. “I have to get back to the conference room. I’ll see you soon.”
Kayla nodded and then watched him turn to leave. “Hey, nice tie,” she called to him.
Sam totally forgot he was in a sanctuary full of people. He turned back to her and winked before he said, “A beautiful woman gave it to me.” Then he left.
Kayla stood there blushing and trying to remember why she’d denied herself the pleasure of his company for so long. She turned to leave and spotted Jasmine a few feet away, staring at her. Kayla nodded in her direction and then headed for the door.
“What kind of church is this?” Kayla said when she saw the bottleneck at the main exit door. “People have to line up to come in and to go out?” The words were meant for her ears only, but the gentleman at the end of the line heard her.
“Pastor Simmons likes to greet the members and visitors on their way out,” he explained.
